The Lithium Connection

For over a decade, Professor Yankner and his team have been analyzing brain tissues and blood samples to better understand the roots of Alzheimer’s. What they found is both fascinating and promising—natural lithium levels in the brain appear to drop significantly in the earliest stages of the disease.

Interestingly, this decline in lithium happens even before any symptoms show up. Individuals with mild cognitive impairment, often considered a precursor to Alzheimer’s, were found to have noticeably lower levels of lithium in their brains. That makes lithium deficiency one of the earliest biological signs of the disease we’ve seen so far.

Why Does Lithium Matter?

Lithium isn’t just a drug for bipolar disorder—it’s also a naturally occurring element in our bodies, and it turns out it’s crucial for maintaining healthy brain function. The new research suggests that as Alzheimer’s begins to take hold, a protein known for forming harmful plaques in the brain—amyloid beta—starts binding to lithium, making it inactive.

This chain reaction may be what starts the Alzheimer’s process. As lithium becomes unavailable, the brain’s ability to manage inflammation and clear out waste breaks down. Connections between brain cells weaken and disappear, and cognitive decline sets in faster than ever.

Mouse Models Confirm It

To test their theory further, the researchers restricted lithium in the diets of healthy mice. The result? The mice began to show brain changes and behaviors similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s patients. That means lithium deficiency isn’t just a symptom of the disease—it could be a driving force behind it.

New Hope for Diagnosis and Treatment

This discovery opens the door to earlier and more accurate diagnosis. If we can measure lithium levels in the brain, we might be able to detect Alzheimer’s years before symptoms appear. That could transform how we approach prevention and treatment, giving doctors a chance to intervene before significant brain damage occurs.
