GALATA TOWER, ISTANBUL

Galata Tower is a tower located in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey.

In 1267, a colony called “Pera” was established in Galata, located north of the Golden Horn, by the Genoese, who were in alliance with the Byzantine Empire.

Galata Tower was built in this area in 1348 and called the “Tower of the Holy Cross” (Turris Sancte Crucis) at the time because of the cross on its top.

It takes its name from the District of Galata, where it is located. Built as a watchtower within the walls of Galata, the tower is used as an exhibition area and Museum for tourist purposes today, together with the various elements it contains. It is one of the symbol structures of Beyoğlu and Istanbul.
