General Directorate of Foundations ignores law, imposes 850% rent increase

The Regional Directorates of Foundations have sent notices to residential and commercial tenants regarding rent increases ranging from 200% to 850%, to be implemented in 2024. These increases have evoked memories of President Erdoğan’s words questioning the conscience of a landlord seeking a 200% rent hike.

The rent increase announcement made by the General Directorate of Foundations across the country has shocked tens of thousands of residential and commercial tenants. Citizens expressing their dissatisfaction with rent increases ranging from 200% to 850%, depending on the location of the rented property in cities and districts, flooded the Communication Center (CİMER) and Foundations Directorates with messages.

The rent hike brings to mind President Erdoğan’s dialogue on November 24, “in which he questioned – and accused – the conscience of a landlord demanding a 200% increase in rent for a tenant whose rent was raised from 2,500 to 7,500 Turkish liras.”

INCREASES UP TO 850%

While Foundations Regional Directorates increased rents in Aydın by 330-600%, in Sivas by 233-465%, in Hatay by 800%, in Ankara by 850%, and in İzmir by 500%, CHP (Republican People’s Party) deputies brought these astronomical increases to the agenda of the Parliament.

Those trying to make their voices heard through social media platforms and complaint websites demanded the reversal of the imposed rent hikes.
