Tensions are high in the Eastern Mediterranean… Germany made a move today to ease tensions in the region. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is on a contact tour in Greece and Turkey today.

First stop of Maas was Athens, the capital of Greece, today to meet with counterpart Nikos Dendias in Athens. Regarding the issue Greek Foreign Minister Dendias said his country was ready for dialogue, while also saying Greece would defend its sovereignty rights. “This tension concerns not only the two NATO allies, but the whole of the European Union,” Dendias said, suggesting that Turkey was provocating.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas urged Greece and Turkey to resolve issues arising from conflicting sovereignty claims in the Eastern Mediterranean through direct negotiations. The German minister warned of the possibility of the two countries entering a military conflict. “The current situation in the Eastern Mediterranean is tantamount to playing with fire… each small spark can lead to disaster,” Maas said in Athens.

Maas, who will also hold talks with Turkish officials to defuse tensions, said Germany and its EU partners have sided with Greece in its dispute with Turkey.
