Gold Prices Fall Below Critical Level: Will the Decline Continue or Is a Rebound Ahead?

GOLD DOLLAR MARKETS

Gold prices slipped below the key $4,000 per ounce mark on Tuesday, pressured by the U.S. dollar’s strength near a three-month high and waning expectations for a rate cut in December. Investors are now closely watching this week’s ADP employment data and ISM PMI figures. Analysts believe that “a weaker ADP report could provide an opportunity for gold to return to its upward trend.”

Dollar Strength Pressures Gold

According to CNBC-e, the dollar index remained near a three-month high as hopes for another Federal Reserve rate cut weakened following internal divisions among Fed members.

Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, said, “A strong dollar acts like a thorn for gold. Investors are recalculating the chances of a rate cut before the end of the year.”

Last week, the Fed cut rates for the second time this year, but Chairman Jerome Powell emphasized that another reduction was “not guaranteed.”

Will the Fed Cut Rates Again in December?

Data from the CME FedWatch Tool shows that before Powell’s comments, markets saw the probability of a December rate cut at over 90%. That figure now stands at around 65%.

Investors Eye U.S. Economic Data

Diverging views among Fed officials on the economic outlook, combined with a partial government shutdown delaying key reports like those from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, have fueled uncertainty ahead of December’s meeting.

Gold, which offers no yield, typically performs well in periods of low interest rates and economic uncertainty.

Could Gold Prices Rise Again?

Investors are focused on the upcoming ADP employment and ISM PMI reports. Waterer added, “A weak ADP report could open the door for gold to move back into an uptrend.”

Gold Prices Decline but Stay Up for the Year

Gold prices have risen 53% so far this year but have fallen 8% since hitting a record high on October 20.

How Are Other Precious Metals Performing?

Spot silver edged up 0.1% to $48.12, platinum gained 0.1% to $1,566.60, while palladium slipped 1% to $1,430.31.
