IYI (Good) Party Chairman Meral Akşener answered a question about whether the elections would be held on time saying “I think they will be held on time.”

Akşener visited Diyarbakır,which had been affected by the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquakes. The leader of the GOOD Party made some statements after examining the area. Akşener also answered the question about whether the elections would be held on time. Her reply was, “I think they will be held on time”.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Kahramanmaraş earthquakes affected millions of people in 10 cities. The first opinion that elections could not be held in such an environment came from an AKP official on February 9: “The official said, “We will look at developments, but at the moment there are very serious difficulties in holding elections on May 14.” Article 78 of the Constitution says that the election can only be postponed for one year by the decision of the Grand National Assembly due to the war. In other words, according to the constitution, elections cannot be postponed for any reason other than war. AKP member politician Bülent Arınç on the other hand said on February 13 that the presidential and parliamentary general elections should be organized by combining them with local elections in 2024. Arinc also suggested on a TV program on the evening of February 17 that otherwise there would be chaos.

Regarding statement made by ARINÇ, AK Party Spokesman Ömer Çelik  said ”It does not reflect the opinion of our party.”
