Google publishes doodle of Turhan SELÇUK, the great Turkish cartoonist




Turhan SELCUK is one of the most prominent names of Turkish humor. He is one of the founders of the Cartoonists Association in Turkey together with his friends. His most popular character is ABDÜLCANBAZ, a fictional character/hero standing by the law and a nightmare for bad people.

His first cartoons were published in 1941 in the “Turkish Word” newspaper published in Adana and in the “Red and White” and “Smash” sports magazines published in Istanbul. He first started working at Vulture (AKBABA magazine) in 1943 and worked as a cartoonist and painter at the TASVIR (depiction) newspaper in 1948.

He also worked in many newspaper companies such as New Istanbul, New Gazette, Akis, direction, Revolution, society magazines in Akin newspapers, Akşam, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet.

Rafik Halit Karay’ın Aydede’de was the chief draws. He has drawn in New Istanbul, New Gazette, Akis, direction, Revolution, society magazines in Akin newspapers, Akşam, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet. Together with his brother Ilhan Selçuk, he published “41 and a half” (1952), Karikatür (1953) and Dolmus (1956) humor magazines.

The artist became very popular with for his series in which he illustrated a character known as ABDÜLCANBAZ (who lived in the Ottoman era) which he started to draw in the Milliyet newspaper in 1957.  Abdulcanbaz was also pictured on a postage stamp by PTT in 1991.

“The Human Rights” cartoon exhibition of the artist whose caricatures have been exhibited in many museums in Turkey and Europe, was opened in Strasbourg for the first time at the suggestion of the Council of Europe and exhibited in many countries of the world (1992-1997).

His cartoon on” peace and the book ” was used on the posters and logos of the book reading campaign launched by the Council of Europe in 1992.

Turhan Selçuk worked for Cumhuriyet newspaper as his last post. He died in Istanbul on 11 March 2010. Awards are given regularly every year by Milas municipality under the name of “international Turhan Selçuk Cartoon Competition” in memory of Turhan Selçuk.
