Travel Turkey: Historic Buildings in Afyonkarahisar Restored through the ‘Street Revitalization Project’
The Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, shared an update about the “Street Revitalization Project” that encompasses Afyonkarahisar Castle and its surroundings.
According to the ministry’s statement, Kurum shared on social media, “Have you seen our colorful street in Afyonkarahisar? With our street revitalization project, we renovated 405 residences and 125 commercial units, and we also changed the appearance of our Ulu Mosque, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. May it have many visitors.”
Project Details
The project aims to preserve the historical texture of Afyonkarahisar and contribute to the city’s tourism. The sixth phase of the project has been completed, and work was carried out in an area extending from the Bedesten Junction to the Ulu Mosque and its surroundings.
The project, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Iller Bank, Afyonkarahisar Municipality, Provincial Special Administration, Konya Rölöve Monument Board, and Eskişehir Conservation Board, involved revitalizing streets over a total area of 2,650 meters. It included 401 residences and 125 commercial units, all restored in the regional architectural style.
The project also restored the structures surrounding the Ulu Mosque, which dates back to the 1270s and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the name “Medieval Anatolian Timber-Colonnade and Beam Mosques.”
