HOTELS FINED FOR DEATH OF CARETTAS

In Belek (Antalya), two hotels are being investigated for putting wooden walking bands on the beach so that feet of customers (guests) would not touch the hot sand, causing the death of 62 Caretta Caretta puppies.

3 separate judicial and administrative investigations have been launched against Port Nature Luxury Resort Hotel and Orange County Resort Hotel for the death of 62 baby sea turtles (that hatched) due to walking bands placed on nests on the beach in Antalya. It was revealed that both hotels had signed a circular on the protection of sea turtles brought by Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) personnel at the beginning of the season. According to “compensation fees” dictated by regulation (The Hunting and wild animals compensation fees) set for 2021 – 2022, said hotels face penalties of about TL 1 million.

According to a report by the World Union for Conservation of nature (UICN), caretta caretta sea turtles, one of the endangered species, nest most in the world on the Mediterranean coast and in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Turkey. In Turkey, the 30 kilometer beach between Kundu and Denizyaka, called the Belek coast in Antalya, where more than 2 thousand nests are formed annually, is the largest nesting area in both Turkey and the Mediterranean Dec.
