WATER LEVEL AT DAMS IN ISTANBUL

The occupancy rate in Istanbul’s dams is at the second lowest level in the last 10 years. Alibeykoy dam is at the lowest rate in the last 10 years with 18.29 percent. ISKI Deputy General Manager said, “There is nothing to worry about. Istanbul will not experience water shortages even during periods of drought in the coming years. There cannot be a situation where it will not rain at all, this will be something we call the doomsday scenario.”

After the dry autumn months in Istanbul, the occupancy rates of the dams supplying water to Istanbul are decreasing every day due to the low amount of precipitation in December. According to ISKI data, the occupancy rate measured today was recorded as 32.25 percent. 280 million cubic meters of water remained in the dams with a total capacity of about 868 million cubic meters. This rate was recorded as the second lowest occupancy rate in the last 10 years. The occupancy rate of Istanbul’s dams, which was measured as 48.02 percent at this time last year, was recorded as 35.44 percent even in 2014, when a major drought was experienced.

ALIBEYKOY DAM HAS ALMOST DRIED UP

The Alibeykoy dam was the most affected by the drought among the dams in Istanbul. According to ISKI data, the occupancy rate at Alibeykoy dam was recorded as 18.29 percent. This value is the lowest value in the last 10 years.

In January 2019, the 100 percent occupancy rate was reached at the Alibeykoy dam. Due to the falling water level in Alibeykoy dam, the section where the dam covers is completely dried up. The concrete tower, which was built to measure the water level, was completely exposed. There is no trace of water in the sections where there were historical aqueducts where fish swam before. A large number of automobile tire tracks attracted attention in these drying sections. The change in the region was displayed from the air.
