Massacre in Kalamış: Three Dogs and 27 Cats Poisoned to Death

In Istanbul’s Kadıköy district, poisonous food was left near Kalamış Park, leading to the deaths of three dogs and 27 cats who consumed it. An additional 12 cats are currently undergoing treatment.
In the early hours of September 1st, unidentified individuals left the poisoned food around Rüştiye Street and Kalamış Park in Kadıköy’s Zühtüpaşa neighborhood. As a result, three dogs and numerous cats were poisoned to death. Some of the affected cats were rushed to nearby clinics, where they are now in intensive care.
Following a report of the incident, police arrived at the scene, collected CCTV footage from the areas where the poisoned animals were found, and took statements from eyewitnesses. Once evidence collection was complete, Kadıköy Municipality conducted a thorough cleanup of the area.
The Kadıköy Street Animals Forum released a statement regarding the incident:
“Animal rights advocates in Kadıköy have gathered the poisoned cats from Kalamış Park, the coastal area, the rocks, the marina, and nearby streets, and brought them to clinics. Following the passage of the ‘Massacre Law’ by the parliament, perpetrators across the country continue to take the lives of our beloved animals. As far as we can determine, 27 cats and three dogs have died in Kalamış Park and its surroundings, while 12 cats are still undergoing treatment. According to Article 28/A of the Animal Protection Law 5199, it is a crime to kill domestic animals. The individuals responsible for killing our four-legged companions must be swiftly identified and prosecuted.
During this difficult time, we express our gratitude as animal rights defenders to the team at Kalamış Veterinary Clinic who have done everything in their power to save the animals, the fire department personnel who helped rescue cats hidden among the rocks, and the employees of Kadıköy Municipality Veterinary Services who provided medication for potentially poisoned animals and conducted necessary legal inspections of the deceased cats and dogs. We also thank Kadıköy Municipality and Mayor Mesut Kösedağı for their support.”
