Minister of Environment: We will move 1.5 million houses in Istanbul

Minister of Environment, Urbanism and Climate Change Murat Kurum said that they would move 1.5 million risky housing units located in Istanbul. The Minister spoke at the Hatay Disaster Coordination Center. Referring to the works related to Istanbul, he stated that 1.5 million housing units would be moved.

Kurum also shared the following: “There are 1.5 million independent flats in Istanbul that need to be transformed. We currently have projects consisting of 94 thousand flats in Istanbul, where only our ministry is continuing, having to do with the immediate transformation of 300 thousand units which urgently need to be transformed. There are two reserve areas where we will convert 1.5 million risky housing units. In Istanbul, we will move 1.5 million risky housing units inside the city to two reserve areas that we have determined both on the Anatolian and European sides.”

Reserve area: According to the law, a reserve area is defined as areas designated by TOKI  or the ministry, depending on the request of the administration, to be used as a new settlement area.
