Ministry Denies Claims of Withholding Tax on Home Rentals in Turkey
The Ministry of Treasury and Finance refuted reports about a 20% withholding tax on residential rent, confirming no regulation is on the agenda.
The T.C. Hazine ve Maliye Bakanlığı has officially denied reports claiming that a 20% withholding tax would be applied to residential property rentals in Turkey.
In its statement dated October 12, 2025, the ministry emphasized that the news circulating in several media outlets does not reflect the truth. It clearly stated, “There is no regulation on the agenda regarding a withholding tax on residential rentals.”
The announcement was concluded with the phrase, “Respectfully announced to the public,” putting an end to the growing speculation.
What was claimed in the reports?
According to the earlier reports, a new draft law to be submitted to Parliament allegedly aimed to impose a 20% withholding tax on homeowners renting out their properties. This would extend the current system, which only applies to commercial properties, to residential rentals as well.
It was also claimed that homeowners would have to pay a 20% tax on the portion of their annual rental income exceeding 47,000 TL. However, the ministry has now made it clear that no such proposal exists.
