According to the figures of the World Population Report, Istanbul is among the 10 most polluted cities in the world. The pollution is determined by the city’s air quality and how much garbage it produces.

According to an independent organization that works to present data about the world population in an understandable way, while 47 percent of the world’s population lived in cities in 2000, today this figure has increased to 55 percent. In 2050, this proportion will increase even more and 68 percent of the world will live in cities.

The biggest disadvantage of people living in urban areas is environmental pollution. Those who experience the negative effects of pollution in crowded cities without proper sustainable infrastructure are again the people who live there.

As of the end of 2019, the city with the highest air pollution (Air Quality Index) in the world was the city of Ghaziabad in India. The Air Quality Index is measured according to five criteria: ground-level ozone, particulate pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

The Air Quality Index (HKE) of Ghaziabad, near the capital New Delhi, is 110.2. The air is considered ‘unhealthy’ or even ‘dangerous’ most of the year.

In terms of air quality, six of the ten most polluted cities in the world are located in India, where poor air quality leads to the premature death of close to 2 million people every year. In addition, arbitrary zoning schemes and industrial complexes near residential areas also negatively contribute to air quality.

The 10 most polluted cities in the air: Ghaziabad, India (110,2), Hotan, China (110.1), Gujranwala, Pakistan (105.3), Faisalabad, Pakistan (104.6), Delhi, India (98.6), Noida, India (97.7), Gurugram, India (93.1), Raiwind, Pakistan (92,2), Greater Noida, India (91,3), Bandhware, India (90,5)

How much ‘garbage’ a city produces is considered a criterion for whether it is dirty

How much ‘garbage’ a city produces is also considered a criterion for whether it is dirty or not. According to this, the most polluted city in the world is New York City. The city of New York produces about 33.2 million tons of waste. This means about 1.7 tons of waste per person, when divided by a population of close to 19

York City is followed by Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, and Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Although they are at the top of the list, they both take out as much garbage as a third of New York.

The 10 cities that produce the most garbage: New York, United States (33.20 million tons), Mexico City, Mexico (12.20), Tokyo, Japan (11.90), Los Angeles, United States (11.10), Mumbai, India (10.03), Istanbul, Turkey (9.30 am), Jakarta, Indonesia (8.64), Cairo, Egypt (7.09), Osaka, Japan (6,70), Sao Paulo, Brazil (6.15)
