New Party Becomes Turkey’s Main Opposition on the Day It Is Founded
Turkey’s political landscape has undergone a historic change with the official launch of the New Party (Yeni Parti), led by Özgür Özel following a split from the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
The new party entered Parliament with the support of 91 Members of Parliament, immediately becoming the second-largest political group in the Turkish Grand National Assembly after the AK Party (AKP). As a result, it also became the country’s official main opposition party on the very day it was founded.
According to political observers, this is the first time in Turkey’s modern multi-party political history that a newly established party has assumed the role of the main opposition immediately upon its creation.
A Historic Shift in Parliament
The political realignment follows months of internal divisions within the CHP after Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu returned to the party leadership. The departure of 91 MPs dramatically changed the balance of power in Parliament, reducing the CHP’s parliamentary representation while giving the newly established party enough seats to become the largest opposition group.
The AK Party remains the largest political group in Parliament, while the New Party now holds second place, ahead of the remaining opposition parties.
A First in Modern Turkish Politics
Although Turkey has seen the creation of many political parties throughout the history of the Republic, previous parties that later became the main opposition only achieved that status after elections or after gaining additional parliamentary support over time.
Political analysts note that the New Party is the first to assume the role of the official main opposition immediately upon its establishment within Turkey’s modern multi-party political system, which has existed since the mid-1940s.
The development marks one of the most significant changes in Turkey’s parliamentary landscape in recent years and is expected to influence the country’s political debate as Parliament continues its legislative work.
