New practice in some restaurants: No sitting at the table without ordering

Recently, cafes and restaurants have introduced policies such as “spending limits” and “mandatory regular orders” for customers. Despite the backlash, many of these establishments are continuing to implement such practices. Most recently, a popular restaurant in Ankara sent a message to its customers stating that for a group of three, they would not accept less than two portions, and that customers who do not place an order will not be allowed to sit at the table.
The high inflation in Turkey has led to soaring prices in the service sector, prompting restaurants and cafes to implement unprecedented policies. Recently, cafes in many cities, especially in Istanbul and Ankara, have been in the spotlight due to practices like “spending limits” and “mandatory order requirements,” and despite the criticism, some restaurants have raised the bar by stating that individuals who do not place an order will not be allowed to sit at the table.
Mandatory Order for Those Dining with Friends: Celal Et Kebap, a restaurant in Ankara, justified its policy by explaining that it provides an ultra-all-inclusive service. The restaurant announced that it would not accept orders of 1.5 portions for two people or 2 portions for three people. The warning message sent to customers stated:
“Dear Guests,
As Celal Et Restaurant, we provide Ultra All-Inclusive service. Therefore, we can only accept orders with a minimum of one portion per person. We are sorry that we cannot accept orders like 1.5 portions for two people or 2 portions for three people.
We are grateful for your understanding and for choosing us.”
