21st March 2013.. Nevruz Day..

It was the day for the long awaited message from OCALAN (jailed leader of outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party) to be delivered to the people of Turkey (and not only Kurds to be realistic).

Over a million people gathered in Diyarbakır’s Nevruz Park in the early hours of the morning to celebrate Nevruz and could not wait to hear with much excitement and curiosity the historic message from Öcalan over the continuing peace process.

The place was full of Öcalan posters, PKK flags and more .. (with no Turkish flags)

Ocalan’s message was considered to be of utmost importance to contribute to the ongoing process to stop the bloodshed between Turks and Kurdish terrorist groups that claim to be fighting for the freedom of Kurds.

The historic message was read out by the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Pervin Buldan and Sırrı Süreyya Önder in Kurdish and Turkish, respectively.

The message called on on armed militants to leave Turkish soil to help open way for a new approach to resolve the conflict that has caused tens of thousands of lives, both of Turkish and Kurdish origin for the last few decades.

In his message Ocalan said;

“We are at a point today that guns should go silent and thoughts should speak out. It is time for armed elements to move outside Turkey’s borders. This is not an end but a new beginning.”

Our fight has not been against any race, religion or groups. Our fight has been against all kinds of pressure and oppression. Today we are waking up to a new Middle East, new Turkey and a new future.

It is time for unity. Turks and Kurds fought together in Dardanelles and established the Turkish Parliament together in 1920

Today a new era is beginning. A door has been opened from armed struggle to democratic struggle.

Our new struggle should be based on ideas, ideology and democratic politics

I call on everyone to help build democratic modernism to escape the pressures which are clearly against history and brotherhood.”

The meeting witnessed top excitement and celebrations continued until late hours.
