Since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, main opposition party CHP and its leader Kemal KILICDAROGLU have been criticizing that President Erdogan and the AK Party government have not taken the necessary steps in time and therefore the spread of the outbreak has not been slowed.

In an interview the opposition leader was asked the question “What would you have done different if you were in power today against the epidemic?”

CHP leader replied as follows:

First of all the government is not aware of the deep damage Covid-19 can cause in society. Secondly, even if they are aware, they are not taking the measures the Science Board has prescribed, owing to economic concerns.

Obviously, keeping people at home would have a cost. If you’re going to keep a person at home, you’re going to have to cover the minimum expenses for him to live on. The “General Health Law” (Article 83) mandates this. We all know the economy is not in good shape. It is clear what impasse the administration which has even used some reserves of the Central Bank, is in. Everybody knows this.

Maybe we can sum it up like this. The contradictions, delays and postponements in the decisions taken are due to the government’s concerns about its own future. If you set off with the anxiety of falling out of power, if that concern becomes effective on the decisions you take, you will fail to solve the underlying problems. That’s the real reason for the picture we live in”.
