President Erdogan announces minimum wage to be applied in Turkey, for 2023

UPDATE: Accordingly, President Erdogan has announced the minimum wage for the beginning of 2023 as 8,500 TL. Erdoğan said this increase corresponded to 50 percent increase according to July 2022.

After quite a long speech about the conditions of Turkey’s economy and the government’s performance regarding the issue the President eventually announced the new minimum wage as 8,500 TL. He also said this could also be improved as due (if need be) during the new year.

Apparently, the Labor Union (TÜRK-İŞ) have not put signature under the decision as their offer was 9,000 TL minimum.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will announce the decision for the 2023 minimum wage in a few minutes. Erdogan had made important statements in regards prior to this announcement. Erdogan had previously said the following: “We cannot step in with everything that everyone says. We’ll think about all this. We will consider all infrastructures from education to health.”

The Confederation of Employers’ Unions of Turkey, which is one of the members of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, had gone to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and met with Minister Bilgin.

The 2023 minimum wage, which concerns millions of employees, was supposed to be announced yesterday. Speaking at the AK Party Group Meeting yesterday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had said that the minimum wage would be announced on said day. Erdogan also held a meeting with Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Bilgin yesterday evening to discuss the minimum wage.

GOD WILLING WE’LL PUT IT (MINIMUM WAGE) ON TRACK

Erdogan said, “Most likely, we will explain the minimum wage issue tomorrow by holding talks with my minister today, God willing, and we will put it on track.” He went on to say, “We will sit down with my minister, the President of the Employer’s Union, we will talk, we will make our assessment. I hope we will take a good step, we will come to the end. We will think about all of these; from education to health, from justice to safety, from transportation to all infrastructure superstructure problems, these will be done with something, right? Of course, those who do not have mold on their backs are talking a lot,” he also found in his assessment.
