Reaction to Turkish Court of Cassation’s decision on Kavala from European Parliament’s rapporteur: “Failure to implement ECHR Decisions is a disaster’

Nacho Sánchez Amor, the Turkey rapporteur for the European Parliament, strongly criticized the decision of the Turkish Court of Cassation to uphold the verdict on Osman Kavala, who was prosecuted in connection with the Gezi Park protests.

Responding to questions from int’l media on the matter, Nacho Sánchez described the failure to adhere to the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe as “a complete disaster.”

Nacho Sánchez also emphasized that this decision would harm the relationship between Turkey and the European Union (EU). He said, “The ECtHR decision is not a political decision but a judicial one, and all members of the Council of Europe should comply with these decisions.”
