UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE IN TURKEY

Turkey is the country with the highest non-labor force population in Europe between the ages of 15-64. In the European Union average, the proportion of the population not included in the labor force is 27 percent, while in Turkey it is 45.1 percent. The proportion of women not included in the labour force is exactly 2 times the EU average in Turkey.

The report, released by the European Union (EU) statistical office (Eurostat) on 22 June, found that Turkey is the first in Europe in the proportion of population not included in the labor force. The proportion of those who are not in the labor force in Turkey has jumped 3.5 percentage points in the past year to 45.1 percent. According to data analyzed by DISK-AR, the non-labor force population between the ages of 15-64 due to the covid-19 epidemic tends to increase all over the world. But as far as the growth of the population, not included in the labor force is concerned, Turkey far exceeds the European average.

EU AVERAGE 27.1 %

In the EU-27 average, the proportion of the non-labour force population aged 15-64 increased by 0.5 percentage points between 2019 and 2020, to 27.1 percent in 2020. Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Estonia are the 5 European countries with the lowest density of non-labor force between the ages of 15-64.

Non-labor force population refers to the working-age population that is not in employment or looking for work. These people are out of the workforce for various reasons, such as education/training, seasonal work, being busy with household chores, retirement, being unable to work or losing hope of finding a job, not looking for a job and being ready to work.

HUGE RISE IN THE DESPERATE

“There is a huge increase in the number of those who are not looking for a job and are ready to work, especially those who are desperate, which has tended to increase in recent years, ” disk-AR commented on the data. The number of those who are not looking for a job in Turkey and are ready to work (desperate and other) has increased by 84.8 percent in the last year and has become 4 million 219 thousand people in 2020,” he said.
