Rishi Sunak becomes new prime minister of UK

Rishi Sunak who served as Finance Minister in Boris Johnson’s government has become the new leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister of the UK in the leadership race that had started after Liz Truss resigned.

The party administration announced that Sunak would become prime minister after the other candidate, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race.

The British press reported that Mordaunt withdrew from the race because he could not get the signatures of nearly 100 politicians from the legislature in order to participate in leadership race within the party.

Penny Mordaunt, on the other hand, made a statement on her social media account, confirming her withdrawal from the race and her support for Sunak and said, “We have chosen the new prime minister.”

Rishi Sunak is also Britain’s first Prime Minister of Indian origin.
