Saudi Arabia targets to gain dialogue partner status in SCO, to be against US benefits

There is no doubt that very strange and dangerous things have been happening in the Middle East region in recent decades. Of course, wars take the first place among them. However, new pacts and new participations in them also attract a lot of attention. The authorities specifically state that these new formations will upset the balances and especially the imperialist powers are not please with this situation at all.

To provide an example, it is certainly possible to talk about Saudi Arabia’s recent rapprochement with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. In this context, Saudi Arabia has decided to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), moving a step closer to China despite the concerns of its traditional ally, the United States.

This way, the kingdom is supposed to gain the status of a dialogue partner in the SCO, a political and security union covering Eurasia and including China, India and Russia. The SCO is seen as a geopolitical counterweight to the United States and Western powers.

The SCO was established in 2001 to counter US hegemony in the region and later expanded to include India and Pakistan. Iran also joined the union with full membership last year.

Riyadh’s growing ties with Beijing have made Washington’s concerns about this issue a top priority. However, some senior Middle East analysts see this move not as Saudi Arabia choosing a side, but as not choosing a side.

Saudi Arabia seems to be trying to diversify its global partnerships in the same way that it has diversified its economy into non-oil sectors and reduced its dependence on a single resource.

Founded nearly 22 years ago, the SCO is still young compared to its nearly 74-year-old Western counterpart, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

There is no doubt that the region is also seen as pregnant to very important new developments in the coming time ahead.
