During his visit to South Korea, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg stressed the growing nuclear threat of North Korea and the possession of such weapons by Russia and China, saying that the United States should increase its nuclear deterrent.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke at a meeting in Seoul at the CHEY Institute for Advanced Studies, which conducts research on the topic of geopolitical risks on the Korean Peninsula.

Stoltenberg said Nato would continue to be a nuclear alliance as long as nuclear weapons exist. He also shared that when nuclear threat caused by countries such as Russia, China, and North Korea was on the agenda, it would impose more danger for Nato members such as USA and France to abandon nuclear weapons.

He went on to say, “As long as nuclear weapons exist, and to be more important when authoritarian powers, such as Russia in particular continue to possess them and also mobilize for large investments and while the number of weapons as we have seen in China and North Korea ready to launch are increasing and at a time we follow the initiatives by North Korea, we believe nuclear deterrence is still a very important task.”

“It is important to understand what is what we call extended deterrence. Some NATO allies and some partners, such as South Korea, benefit from the nuclear deterrence umbrella provided by the United States, although they do not possess nuclear weapons. This is the most important way to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.”
