WEIGHT LOSS OPERATION TURKEY

The BBC, Britain’s public broadcaster suggested that seven Britons who had come to Turkey for ‘weight loss’ operations, such as stomach reduction, had lost their lives.

The BBC has recently published a news about health tourism, a market which is growing in Turkey. In the news, it was noted that a large number of Britons had applied to organizations in Turkey for ‘weight loss surgery’.

Among the reasons for applying to Turkey were the decrease in cost due to the value of the Turkish lira and the long wait for this surgery in Britain.

Stating that the ‘before/after’ photos and videos on social media were also very effective, the BBC noted that a woman introduced by the nickname Katie had stomach reduction surgery in Turkey in 2021, but then stayed in the hospital in Britain for a year due to complications.

Katie said the surgery ”Ruined my life.”

While official data on how many people from the UK have come to Turkey and undergone these surgeries has not been disclosed, the BBC has suggested that seven British citizens have died after surgery since 2019.

One of these people was identified as 25-year-old Joe Thornley. Thornley’s father Mick said that a phone call from Turkey reached him, telling him that his son’s blood pressure had dropped and he had a heart attack.

However, an autopsy conducted after Thornley’s body was brought to the country revealed that he died of internal bleeding during surgery, the news said. Mick Thornley said he had called the doctor who performed the surgery but had got no return.
