Shell’s $2 million lawsuit against Greenpeace

Oil company Shell is suing Greenpeace for $2.1m (£60m) in damages. Shell confirmed in an email to Reuters that legal proceedings against Greenpeace were ongoing.
Greenpeace activists boarded Shell’s ship near the Canary Islands in January to protest oil drilling and traveled all the way to Norway. The ship was due to head to the Penguins oil and gas field in the North Sea.

Shell confirmed in an email to Reuters that legal proceedings against Greenpeace were ongoing, but did not provide information about the amount of compensation.
In a document seen by Reuters, he noted that the compensation amount was written as $ 2.1 million. This amount included damages and costs incurred due to shipping delays, extra security costs and legal costs.
A Shell spokesman described boarding a ship on the move at sea as ‘illegal and extremely dangerous’. The spokesman said: “The right to protest is fundamental and we absolutely respect that. But this needs to be done safely and in accordance with the law.”
