Statement from Minister of Transport: Double inspection to scooters
The number of death reports especially in accidents involving scooters, preferred by young people in short-distance transportation, has been increasing recently. Minister of Transport KARAISMAILOGLU said that work was being carried out to prevent these accidents adding “There are rules, but there is no one who complies with them. The municipality and the security forces need to conduct very frequent inspections.”
Every day we receive news of a new scooter accident. A short time has passed since the accident in which the young people on the scooter were hit by a car in Antalya lost their lives. In the recent period, the increase in the news of those who died in scooter accidents has reached a remarkable size. Reminding that they had published a regulation for the use of scooters on April 14, 2021, Transport Minister announced that they would make a new regulation taking into account the increase in accidents.

Explaining that micro vehicles that facilitate transportation such as bicycles, scooters, walking paths would be encouraged, Minister of Transport said: “Now these have become like a part of our lives. Especially young people prefer scooters. We, as the units that regulate transportation, for example, we encourage the use of this type of passenger transportation over short distances, the use of this type of micro vehicles. Bicycles, scooters, walkways, walking areas… will actually be the biggest trends of the coming years. Especially since this has to be the biggest job of local governments. Walking, cycling, the use of these is encouraged on 15-minute trips.
THERE ARE ERRORS IN USE
The scooter is also an indispensable thing, but it was used in a completely unregulated way. As a result, it entered our lives, and we published rules and regulations to put it in order. So that this work could be done by applying them. But we see that in some uses there are still some mistakes. We are doing a study to see what can be done for this. To make it much more difficult to use, you also need to do inspections very often. The inspection should be carried out by the municipality and the security forces. And they introduced the motorcycle type. For example, there is no content for them in the regulations. Security forces collects them when theysee them.”
REFLECTOR-VEST COMPULSORY BUT NOT MANY COMPLY
“There are night reflectors, vests and so on in the regulations, but no one complies. And there are also situations where 2-3 people ride. But whether it’s bicycles or walking paths, these are the jobs that need to be encouraged now. Pedestrianization projects, for example. These are the jobs that need to happen. Because it is necessary to build a subway in large metropolises such as Istanbul, it is necessary to improve public transportation, but after that, it is also necessary to take measures to deter travel by these special vehicles.”
