Statement from minister about death of flamingos: News has upset us all

Speaking about flamingo deaths around Salt Lake, Minister Kurum said: “There are 18 special protection zones in Turkey. One of them is in Salt Lake. It is one of the areas where endemic species, wildlife and flamingos rarely breed.

He went on to say, “We’re taking all steps to protect the Salt Lake. We have taken many steps in order to treat the waters around the lake and direct them into the lake, both to reclamation the breeding areas and to raise awareness of the citizens who visit the area and to protect this region.”

Kurum also added following; “In 1997, the number of flamingos here was about 4 thousand, and in 2020 about 20 thousand flamingos were detected. The news regarding death of the baby flamingos has upset us all. Immediately, our Konya Governor’s office has started the study on the causes of death.”
