An area in Turkey where growth seems to be quite stable: Number of people in Prisons

According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the population in prisons is growing steadily every year. In the 10-year period covering 2010-2019, the increase was 100 percent.

The number of people in prisons as of 31 December 2019 was 291,546 corresponding to an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the same date in 2018.

As of December 31, 2019, 84.1 percent of the population in prisons were convicts and 15.9 percent were detainees. Of these people, 96.1 percent were men and 3.9 percent were women.

As of the end of 2019, there were 362 prisons in Turkey. 60,726 people work in these prisons, which have a number of 230 thousand beds.

The AKP government seems to be determined to build more prisons in the time ahead as well. Construction of a total of 91 new prisons, which will cost a total of 13 billion pounds and will be opened by 2021 at the latest, is in full swing.
