NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN GERMANY

German Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck said “If the worst happens, we can act” on the issue of keeping nuclear power plants on standby. German Minister of Economy and Climate Protection Robert Habeck announced that 2 out of the remaining 3 nuclear power plants in the country would be kept on standby as an emergency reserve until mid-April 2023, in case of possible energy shortages in winter.

Habeck said at a press conference in the capital Berlin that the stress test commissioned for the country’s electricity system showed that a crisis for the winter was unlikely.

Minister Robert Habeck reported that 2 of the 3 remaining nuclear power plants in the country (Isar 2 in Bavaria and Neckarwestheim 2 in Baden-Württemberg) would be kept on standby as an emergency reserve until mid-April 2023, in case they needed to close a gap in electricity production this winter.

‘IF THE WORST HAPPENS WE WILL TAKE ACTION’

“If the worst happens, we can take action,” Habeck said, speaking about keeping nuclear power plants on standby.

Habeck, who explained that the German government remained committed to the policy of exiting nuclear energy, stressed that the Emsland nuclear power plant in Lower Saxony would be closed as planned in December.
