Turkey breaks record in number of divorces and divorce rate in 2022

The number of divorced couples broke a record with 180 thousand 954 in 2022. 32.7% of divorces took place within the first five years of marriages.

While the number of married couples was 563 thousand 140 in 2021, it became 574 thousand 358 in 2022. The rough marriage rate, which refers to the number of marriages per thousand of the population, was realized as 6.76 per thousand in 2022.

Number of marriages that declined due to the pandemic in 2020 increased in 2021 and 2022.

According to TURKSTAT data, the number of divorced couples was 175 thousand 779 in 2021 and 180 thousand 954 in 2022. The gross divorce rate, which refers to the number of divorces per thousand of the population, was realized as 2.13 per thousand in 2022.

The number of divorcing couples and the crude divorce rate set a record in 2022.

The first place in the reasons for divorce was ‘incompatibility’. In 2022, 175 thousand 73 marriages ended due to ‘incompatibility’. The number of marriages ended due to ’adultery‘ was 124, while 39 marriages ended due to ’very bad treatment‘ and 89 marriages ended due to ’crime and dishonor’. The number of marriages ended on the grounds of ’abandonment‘ was 91, while 46 marriages ended on the grounds of ’mental illness’. There were 1159 cases in the ‘other’ category and 4 thousand 333 cases in the ‘unknown’ category in the reasons for divorce.
