Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) Chairman: “We have completed all preparations for the electronic voting system”

Statements from Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) Chairman Ahmet Yener about a potential “electronic voting system” have stirred discussion. Yener noted, “We have completed all preparations for the electronic voting system. The decision now rests with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).”

Journalist Sinan Burhan highlighted that Yener, in their conversation, had described this as a significant step for Turkey’s election system. Yener reportedly stated, “We examined the election systems in Russia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. Today, technology is used at the highest levels globally. In collaboration with Ankara University, we have completed all preparations for the electronic voting system. The final decision is with the Turkish Parliament.” This declaration has sparked debate on the future of Turkey’s election process.

Burhan further explained that R&D is underway, with Ankara University and various scientists involved. Support has been provided by TÜBİTAK and other technological agencies to develop the infrastructure.

PROS AND CONS OF ELECTRONIC VOTING WILL BE EVALUATED

In previous comments, YSK Chairman Yener indicated they were working on determining a system suitable for Turkey. He said “the pros and cons of electronic voting for Turkey will be evaluated” and noted that previous studies had been conducted by the YSK. The final decision on implementing such a system, however, would require legislative action, which falls under the authority of parliament.
