Lawmakers at the Turkish parliament’s General Assembly reacted to the racist action committed by Greek lawmaker who tore down the Turkish flag at the European Parliament’s General Assembly held in Brussels.

The General Assembly of the parliament was convened under the chairmanship of Mithat Sancar, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. Before the General Assembly started to discuss the agenda, lawmakers reacted to Greek lawmaker Ioannis Lagos who tore up the Turkish flag in the European Parliament.

The deputy chairman of AK Party group said, “I condemn this despicable act. I would like to remind you that both the Greek authorities and the European Parliament should take appropriate action on this issue”.

On the other hand CHP (opposition party) Group Vice Chairman Engin Altay shared following: “Flag is everything. This impudence made by an independent MP named Ioannis Lagos is of course never acceptable.

It should be noted that after the liberation of Izmir, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who came to Izmir was at the steps of the building he was about to enter. The citizens had laid a Greek flag so he could step on it before going in. ATATURK ordered the flag to be carefully packed and then stepped in. This was the respect he showed for the flag”.
