Turkey, a developing country (still) is often criticized for the pressure on women in society.

This observation could partly be referred to as true because most Turkish men would prefer their wives to stay at home and look after their children etc instead of being exposed in the society.

Although this brings additional burden to the family, as the man has to do all the working to bring home food, traditions and neighborhood pressure may be dominant, at times.

This fact was referred to by World Bank’s Turkey Director Raiser who said if Turkey wanted more productivity in the next 20 years then women needed to take part in the labor market, too.

Mr Raiser spoke at the “Works” titled introduction meeting of “2013 World Progress Report” organized by Koc University in Istanbul, Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association’s (TUSIAD) Economic Research Forum (EAF), Bahcesehir University and the World Bank and stressed the importance of women’s joining in labor market. He also added, “Because, before the crisis, this participation rate was lower”.

He went on to say if women did not join the labour market the demographic feature would benefit from the demographic power’s half.
He stated that women’s labor force participation rate in Turkey was about 30 percent and said, “It is a little bit less than the majority of OECD countries.”
