Violence in Turkey: 136 Elderly people subjected to abuse and rights violations in June

ELDERLY PEOPLE IN TURKEY

According to a report about Monitoring of Violence and Violations against the Elderly Report by an association involved in “Aging Studies”, 136 elderly people were subjected to violence, abuse, neglect, rights violation and discrimination throughout Turkey between June 1-30.

The report, which has been prepared every month since January 2021, is based on daily scanning and analysis of the news reflected in the media. The report aims to raise awareness among central and local governments, non-governmental organizations, academia and all interested parties in order to prevent violence, abuse, neglect, violation of rights and discrimination against the elderly.

In June, the most cases of violence, abuse, neglect and discrimination against the elderly were detected in Istanbul. 13 of these cases lived in Istanbul, 11 in Aydın, eight in Bursa, eight in Sakarya and six in Antalya.

22 SUSPICIOUS DEATHS

22 of the cases were classified as suspicious deaths. In addition, 45 of them consist of deaths caused by unnatural means and negligence, such as falls, negligence, work accidents, traffic accidents, fires, losses and carbon monoxide poisoning. 10 murder cases have also been identified. As a result, 49 percent of cases of violence, abuse, neglect and discrimination against the elderly resulted in death last month.

TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN FIRST PLACE

The 23 traffic accident cases that occurred as a result of negligence ranked first among the rights violations against the elderly. The number of accidents experienced by the elderly while using a pedestrian crossing is high. In the third place, the missing persons cases come in. However, as a result of the fire, there were 12 cases of violation of rights due to negligence.
