Warning sign placed for Mediterranean seals on beach in Mersin district

In the Mediterranean district of Mersin, warning signs were placed on the beach for “Mediterranean seals”, under the threat of extinction. Boat trips, diving and seafood hunting activities were also banned in areas where seals are often seen.

Warning signs have been placed on the beach in the Mediterranean district of Mersin within the scope of the “Mediterranean Seal Protection Project”.

According to the statement of the Mediterranean Municipality, Mediterranean seals, which are under the threat of extinction, are protected in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Faculty of Fisheries of Mersin University,

Within the scope of the study prepared within this framework, boat trips, diving and hunting activities for seafood were banned in the regions where Mediterranean seals are often seen.

Mayor of the Mediterranean Mustafa Gültak and his companions erected signs reading “Mediterranean seal rest beach, do not disturb” on the sands on the beach of the Millet Garden, which is the resting area of seals.

Emphasizing that they erected the sign in order to increase social awareness, Gültak said, “We will do our part to protect the Mediterranean seals, which are endangered worldwide, and also for our children to get to know and love this cute creature. My call to our citizens is also, if you come across our Mediterranean seals on the beach, please let’s not disturb them, let’s take care of these cute creatures.”
