Women exposed to violence in Turkey in 2020

According to the report shared by a platform, 300 women were killed in 2020 and the deaths of 171 women were listed as “suspicious.” In 2020, as in all over the world, Turkey suffered great losses due to the outbreak of the corona virus. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, avalanches also caused the death of more than 200 people. On the other hand the social wound of many years that is women murders, did not stop in 2020, either.

According to the 2020 Report of referred platform to stop the murders of women, 300 women were killed and 171 women were found suspiciously dead.

The platform made an announcement highlighting the murders of Aylin Sözer, Selda Taş, Vesile Dönmez and Betül Tugluk committed on the last day of the year and said “We will stop the murders of women. This year 300 murders of women have been committed, 171 women have been found suspiciously dead. Of the 300 women killed, 182 were killed, 22 were economic, and 96 were killed when they wanted to make decisions about their own life, such as asking for a divorce, refusing to make peace, refusing to marry, rejecting a relationship.”

The platform also said, “The inability to determine under what pretext 182 women were killed is a result of violence against women and the invisible killing of women. Unless it is determined who killed the women and why; unless a fair trial is held and the suspects, accused and murderers receive deterrent sentences, preventive measures are applied, the violence continues to change in size.”
