FINLAND AND SWEDEN NATO ENTRY

Bloomberg, one of the leading US media outlets has asked senior Turkish officials about Turkey’s moves regarding Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO membership. The officials, (not named) have made remarkable statements.

The approach of the Nordic countries Finland and Sweden to NATO, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine since February 24, has caused a noticeable tension in the alliance.

Last week, President Erdogan caused a shock in the western world when he announced that he did not look warmly at Nato memberships of Finland and Sweden, signaling that Turkey could prevent these two countries from entering NATO.

As parties met at the summit held in Berlin over the weekend, President Erdogan also said this week, “Sweden is the incubation center of terrorist organizations. The terrorists are speaking in their parliament. They’re coming on Monday, so if they’re coming to convince us, don’t come. I’m sorry, they shouldn’t even take the bothering. We will not say ‘yes’ to those who impose sanctions on Turkey, to join NATO in this process. Otherwise, NATO would be a place where representatives of terrorists are concentrated” he said.

Bloomberg, one of the leading media organizations in the United States, met with 3 senior Turkish officials while negotiations and application processes on the issue were ongoing. The three Turkish officials, who did not disclose their names because the matter was sensitive and they were not authorized to speak, listed Ankara’s demands from NATO and from Sweden and Finland.

PKK AND ITS EXTENSIONS

Sources who spoke to Bloomberg said that Turkey’s candidate countries should take more action against the terrorist organization PKK and its extensions YPG/PYD.

THE ARMS EMBARGO

Senior officials also said that Turkey demanded the lifting of the arms embargo imposed by some EU member states, along with Sweden and Finland

OTHER REQUESTS

On the other hand, Turkish officials pointed out that besides these demands, other demands were also on the agenda. It was noted that Turkey wanted to buy F-400s, the sale of which was stopped after the purchase of the S-35 from Russia, while it also wanted to buy F-16s and kits.

It was also stated that Ankara also wanted the sanctions imposed by the United States due to the S-400s to be lifted.
