IMAMOGLU AND KURUM

As Turkey approaches the March 31 local elections which are crucial for both the ruling AK Party and the opposition, a truly tough challenge is observed.

Among most important cities, Istanbul and Ankara undoubtedly stand out. It is known that if Erdogan were to lose Istanbul to Imamoglu for the second (or even third) time, it would be a significant prestige loss for him. On the other hand, if Imamoglu were to win this race once again, it would pave the way for him for the 2028 Presidential elections.

SITUATION IN ANKARA

Looking at Ankara, the current Mayor Mansur Yavas appears to be comfortably winning the election against his AK Party opponent – so much so that AK Party’s hope for Ankara is said to have diminished, both in political circles and in the media.

THE LATEST SITUATION IN ISTANBUL

It seems that the AK Party candidate for Istanbul is facing significant shortcomings for the position. Both his lack of experience in this regard and his political incompetence (which is related to experience) are putting him in very difficult situations against his opponent. Moreover, some neglect and failures in his past roles in government positions (including the Hatay earthquake) constantly come back to haunt him. He seems to find himself helpless in making explanations on these matters, in particular.

Therefore, despite challenge from all parties, including AK Party, İYİ Party, and the Democratic Regions Party (a Kurdish party), CHP candidate Imamoglu seems to be leading the race with about 41-42 percent.

Let’s see what the next 30 days will bring.
