BIDEN ERDOGAN MEETING

On June 14, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will get a chance to hold his long-awaited Biden meeting. This interview is seen as vital for Erdogan. It should not be difficult to see the reason for this is the political power of the Turkish President has been weakening for a long time.

Yes, especially the events that have developed against the AK Party and Erdogan in domestic politics present serious question marks about how this very strong politician will perform in the first election and whether he will be able to retain his seat.

Despite all kinds of pro-media propaganda, a significant segment of the public no doubt realizes that Turkey is not well managed. The reason is the prices in the market and therefore the lack of livelihood of the people are good enough to paint this picture for people to see.

At this point, it would certainly be not fair to ignore the negative impact of the pandemic. But the situation was not very different before that, either. In addition, “the fact that freedom of speech and opinion within the country has been considerably restricted”, is also causing AK Party and Erdogan to lose credit.

When we add the loss of stability and power that cannot be achieved in foreign policy to all above, we are faced with quite a negative picture, for the ruling power.

While the president has been dealing with all this, all of a sudden he has a Sedat Peker problem, as well. It seems that the corruption shares announced by this Mafia leader in Youtube posts from abroad have seriously damaged the ruling party, recently.

In light of all this information, it is clear that Erdogan will want to get the support he urgently needs by establishing good relations with the United States and Biden again. It is also clear that the president needs this support both financially and politically. The question here is, “What will the United States and Biden want from Erdogan in return?”

The answer to this question looks quiite simple; Biden will want Turkey to act as a full partner for the United States, especially in this region. In other words, he will demand that at Turkey does not oppose the strategies and plans designed and implemented by the United States, at least and even not deny its support when necessary. Among said plans, there is no doubt we can see the issue of the YPG, as the most important part. In other words, the issue of creating a Kurdish state in Syria that will operate under the full guidance of the United States will probably be the biggest boil for Turkey. He will also be able to ask Turkey to review its dreams of hegemony in the Eastern Mediterranean and some of its views on Cyprus, very likely.

Let’s ask again at this point; Will Erdogan be able to meet these demands, knowing that these are against the benefits of Turkey? The answer to the question is Erdogan unfortunately is in a very difficult situation regarding above and more issues – not to forget the Halkbank case and the issues of assets abroad.

Well what can we say at this point except for “God be with Turkey”?
