Winter Makes a Sudden Move: What Istanbul, Muğla, and Antalya Should Expect

Cold weather is tightening its grip across Turkey, and even regions known for milder winters are beginning to feel the change. According to the latest forecasts from the Meteorology Department, temperatures are dropping nationwide, while snow, rain, and strong winds are set to affect many areas. Istanbul, Muğla, and Antalya each face very different but equally notable weather conditions in the coming days.
Istanbul: Colder Air, Rain Below, Snow Above
In Istanbul, the shift in weather is already noticeable. Skies are mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain expected throughout the day. As temperatures fall, higher districts and elevated areas of the city may see rain turning into sleet, and at times even snow.
While central and coastal parts of Istanbul are likely to remain rainy, northern and higher neighborhoods could experience brief snow showers overnight. Combined with falling temperatures, there is an increased risk of slippery roads, particularly during late night and early morning hours.
Muğla: Cloudy Skies and a Sharp Temperature Contrast
Muğla, often associated with mild coastal weather, is also feeling the effects of the cold wave. The province is expected to remain mostly cloudy, with temperatures noticeably lower than seasonal averages.
While coastal districts may avoid snowfall, inland and higher elevations could experience chilly conditions, especially during the night. The contrast between daytime cloud cover and colder evenings may catch residents and visitors off guard, making warm clothing a good idea even in southern Aegean areas.
Antalya: Mild but Unsettled Weather Along the Coast
Antalya continues to sit on the warmer side compared to much of the country, but conditions are far from stable. The city is forecast to experience partly to mostly cloudy skies, with cooler air gradually making itself felt.
Although snowfall is not expected along the coast, temperatures are dipping, and the surrounding higher terrain may see colder conditions. The typical winter calm of Antalya is being replaced by a more unsettled pattern, reminding residents that winter has arrived even on the Mediterranean coast.
A Nationwide Cold Wave in the Background
While Istanbul, Muğla, and Antalya each experience different versions of this weather system, the bigger picture shows a country-wide cold spell. Inland and eastern regions are dealing with widespread snow and ice, while coastal areas are seeing rain, strong winds, and falling temperatures.
Meteorology officials continue to warn of icy conditions, especially overnight and in elevated areas, urging drivers and pedestrians to stay alert as winter conditions spread.
