A 2,500-year-old rock tomb discovered in the district of Marmaris in Muğla will be developed for tourism purposes. Marmaris Museum Director Şehime Atabey, a museum specialist and archaeologist together with other academic staff from university conducted examinations at the rock tomb located in the village of Yeşilbelde.

MTO President Amos highlighted that Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Gürbüzer and his team, who also lead the Amos Ancient City Excavation Directorate, would be working on the rock tomb.

Ayhan stated that the surrounding area of the rock tomb would be cleaned, and efforts such as creating walking routes would be made to promote tourism. He said, “We have started working to obtain the necessary permits for the research and arrangements to be made in the region. We will work together with our Marmaris Museum Director Şehime Atabey on this project. We will contribute to adding another cultural value to our tourism.”

Known as a Lycian-type rock tomb, the structure represents a tomb tradition extending from Fethiye in the south to Akyaka in the west. It is estimated that the tomb, which contains five burial beds, belonged to an important family from the 4th century BC.
