The President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, Hafize Gaye Erkan, announced her resignation via her social media account, stating that she requested to be relieved of her duties. Following Erkan’s announcement, the Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, made a statement.

The President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, Hafize Gaye Erkan, announced her resignation via her social media account. Hafize Gaye Erkan’s post reads as follows:

“As it is known to the public, I have been serving as the President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey since June 8, 2023.

As a native born and raised in these sacred lands where every inch of soil has been paid for dearly, I came to my country and assumed my duty as the head of the Central Bank without considering my personal circumstances. At that time, as a mother of a child who had not yet reached the age of maturity, I was well aware of the difficulties of undertaking such a demanding role.

I have tirelessly served at my post day and night to serve our state and our nation. At this point, our economic program has begun to bear fruit. The increase in our reserves and economic indicators, as well as the main trend indicators of inflation, are evidence of this success.

Despite all these positive developments, as is known to the public, there has been a major character assassination campaign against me, recently. In order for my family and, more importantly, my innocent child, who has not even reached the age of one and a half, to be affected any further, I hereby request my resignation from the honorable duty that I have been carrying out with pride since the very beginning at the request of our esteemed President.

I owe a debt of gratitude to our esteemed Minister of Treasury and Finance, who has enabled me to experience the pride of being the first female president of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, and to my colleagues, who I have worked with for almost 9 months with great dedication day and night.

After 22 years of managerial and banking experience in the private sector in America, I express my gratitude and appreciation to our esteemed President, who has provided me with the opportunity to serve my country and my nation, which will be the greatest legacy I will leave to my child, and who has never withheld his support from me throughout my tenure in office.”
