CHP TRUSTEE APPOINTMENT

In a major development shaking up Turkish politics, the Istanbul Provincial Administration of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been suspended by court order, with a temporary board appointed in its place. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office clarified the situation, emphasizing that the decision is a precautionary measure (ihtiyati tedbir), not a permanent ruling.

Court Suspends CHP Istanbul Leadership Elected in 2023

The decision was handed down by the Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance, targeting the party leadership that emerged from the 38th Ordinary Istanbul Provincial Congress held on October 8, 2023. The court ordered that Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik, along with the elected members of the Provincial Executive and Disciplinary Boards, be temporarily removed from duty.

This legal move stems from a lawsuit filed by several CHP delegates, raising concerns over the legitimacy or procedural conduct of the 2023 congress.

Prosecutor’s Office: “This is a Precautionary Court Decision”

Shortly after the court’s announcement, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement explaining the nature of the ruling. According to the statement, the decision is strictly precautionary, taken as part of the ongoing legal process initiated by CHP members themselves.

The statement read:
“The decision made by the Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance, dated today, regarding the temporary removal of the Istanbul provincial chair, provincial executive board members, and disciplinary board members, is a precautionary measure taken in response to a lawsuit filed by some CHP delegates.”

A Temporary Board Takes Over CHP Istanbul

Following the suspension, the court appointed a temporary board composed of Gürsel Tekin, Zeki Şen, Hasan Babacan, Müjdat Gürbüz, and Erkan Narsap. This interim team will now be responsible for carrying out the duties of the Provincial Chair, Executive Board, and Disciplinary Board until a final legal resolution is reached.

This unprecedented development has added fresh tension to intra-party dynamics within the CHP, especially as it comes ahead of key political timelines in Turkey. As the legal process unfolds, all eyes are now on the CHP’s national leadership and how they’ll navigate this critical challenge in Istanbul, one of the party’s most influential strongholds.
