TURKISH CITIZENSHIP FOR FOREIGNERS

An amendment was made to the regulation on the admission of foreign citizens to Turkish citizenship by meeting certain conditions. Alpay Antmen, one of the deputies of the CHP stated that there was a dangerous deficit in the regulation and added that many criminals, including drug traffickers and members of jihadist organizations, could obtain citizenship in this way. “The Interiror Minister does not reject this,” said Antmen, who also stated that he had submitted a question motion on the subject.

An amendment was made to the regulation on the admission of foreign citizens to Turkish citizenship by meeting certain conditions. Accordingly, with the amendment made on 5 January 2022 and published in the Official Gazette today, foreign citizens who have invested between 250 thousand and 500 thousand dollars will be granted citizenship of the Republic of Turkey.

Stating that there was a dangerous point in the said regulation, CHP Mersin Deputy Antmen noted that criminals, especially drug traffickers, coulf get citizenship from Turkey by paying for these funds. Antmen, who cited as an example some citizenship granting regulations in the world, said that citizenship in Turkey was sold “like an export product”.

The deputy said, “Turkey has been downgraded to a country that sells its right to citizenship on the black market. However, modern countries have set very important criteria for such an important issue as the right to obtain citizenship. For example, Germany, which is one of the most powerful countries in the economic dec of the European Union, offers those who want to start a business in their country a residence permit for 250 thousand euros and a chance to become a citizen in the coming years. That is, no immediate citizenship upon payment. In those countries, you have to deserve it first.”

CLAIMS THAT ‘JIHADIST GROUPS HAVE BEEN GRANTED CITIZENSHIP’

Stating that he had raised the issue many times before, the deputy said, “It is not clear who is coming, and what they are doing,” and stated that foreign nationals who would be granted citizenship might be linked to criminal organizations.
