After occupying the agenda of the country as well as the world for weeks Gezi Park events seem to have approached a happy end, eventually.

Turkish PM Erdoğan decided to meet with a second group to include 16 representatives of the protesters, including artists and members of the Taksim Solidarity Platform late Thursday.

After a discussion of over 4 hours Hüseyin Çelik, spokesperson for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) held a press briefing on which occasion he declared that the government would comply with a court decision that suspended the demolition of Gezi Park.

Spokesperson Çelik referred to a court ruling on the suspension of the planned Artillery Barracks project, which was set to be built in the place of Gezi and said that in the case the appeal failed, the site would be kept as a park. In the event that the project receives a green light after the appeal the government will organize a referendum regarding Gezi Park’s fate.

Çelik also said “Turkey is a state of law. It is impossible for the executive branch to perform an unlawful act. There is a court decision, the government must conform to it,” adding that the park would be untouched until the court’s decision.
