Three Northern Irish tourists who came to Turkey for teeth whitening treatment were found unconscious in the room where they were staying in Bodrum. One tourist died, while others were in critical condition. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

According to a report in a British newspaper, Declan Carson and Aaron Callaghan who are in a coma and Richard Molloy (33) who lost his life had come to Marmaris for a teeth whitening operation.

It was suggested that the Irish tourists had taken some medication related to the treatment in question before being found unconscious in their apartment. But there was no official explanation for the cause of death.

The Irish Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the matter, announcing that they were in contact with Turkish officials. “We continue to support the family of our citizen who died in Turkey and are in contact with the Turkish authorities,” the spokesman said, speaking on behalf of the British Foreign Office.

The British newspaper reported that tourists had died in Marmaris while according to local sources, tourists died in Bodrum, where they were staying for a holiday.

Together with the service sector, Turkey has made a serious breakthrough in the field of medical tourism, in which very serious campaigns have been conducted thanks to the temperate climate and the depreciation of the TL against exchange rates, both as well. Medical tourism has stood out as an important industry item for Turkey in recent years.

In 2017, more than 700 thousand tourists chose Turkey for different treatments from teeth whitening to hair transplantation and organ transplantation. By 2023, that number is set to rise to 2 million.

Regarding the death of the Irish citizen in south western Turkey, down below is the testimony his friend gave at the police station

‘WE USED IT ON THE PLANE’

In Carson’s statement to police in Didim, he said: “We were (3 friends) were walking on the beach. We met a Turkish citizen there. We took alcohol together at the bar on Yalı Street. We went to other bars until midnight. We continued drinking at the apartment hotel where we returned. At this time, Molloy was ill, unable to breathe. And then we got sick, and when we opened our eyes, we were in the hospital. We used cocaine on the plane on the way to Turkey” (Translation from Sözcü / 07 October 2020)

May his soul rest in peace.
