The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change expects an increase in the number of flamingos breeding in the Salt Lake Special Environmental Protection Zone this year due to the fact that precipitation remains at a normal value and there is enough water around the lake.

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has determined that 1877 baby flamingos hatched last year in the Salt Lake Special Environmental Protection Zone.

Every year, the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets under the Ministry conducts work to preserve and transmit species that are endangered to future generations.

FLAMINGO POPULATION IN SALT LAKE MONITORED EACH YEAR

In this context, the flamingo population is being investigated with annual species monitoring studies in Salt Lake, which has the status of “Natural Site”, “Important Plant Area”, “Important Nature Area” and “Important Bird Area”. In field studies, observations are carried out with various means such as direct observation, aircraft, binoculars, telescope etc.

The flamingo population, which breeds in Turkey, accounts for about 34 percent of the entire European population. France, Spain and Turkey host the largest flamingo populations in Europe.

SALT LAKE AMONG BEST KNOWN BREEDING GROUNDS
Some flamingos stay in Turkey all year round, while others migrate to Mediterranean countries. Flamingos, which are generally found in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Central Anatolia regions in Turkey, are seen in small numbers in the Black Sea and Marmara. The Salt Lake and the Gediz Delta are among the best known breeding grounds for flamingos.
