URBAN TRANSFORMATION

The law proposal containing regulations for urban transformation was approved in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) General Assembly and became law. The primary goal of the 21-article law is supposed be “to expedite urban transformation projects in areas at risk of disasters”.

With the new regulation, the requirement for a two-thirds majority of property owners for a decision on urban transformation is eliminated. Such decisions will now be made with a simple majority of property owners – which is seen as A THREAT TO THE PROPRIETARY RIGHT (and could be manipulated by authority if need be).

If the evacuation of risky buildings is obstructed, law enforcement agencies will become involved.

Inspections of risky buildings can be carried out by the Urban Transformation Presidency or relevant authorities.
