Relations between NATO allies France and Turkey have been strained in recent weeks due to drilling issue in the east of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as issues north of Libya and Syria.

Speaking together with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, Macron said: “energy and security considerations are very critical in this part of the Mediterranean which is very important for both countries. What is happening here is that Turkey and Russia are struggling to gain more power in the region, and the steps taken by the EU on this issue are insufficient.”

“It would be a serious mistake for the EU to hand over to Turkey and other actors to ensure our security in the Eastern Mediterranean. This cannot be an option for Europe and France will not allow that to happen,” he said.

Macron also said sanctions should be imposed on those involved in Libya to ensure a ceasefire and a political solution.
